About Chanté Gibbs!
Now let’s get into Stitched Up!
Explain your process for selecting the item from our store. What drew you to it?
Before heading to Goodwill, I narrowed down what I wanted to make. Ultimately I decided to create a coat that would be my statement piece for New Year’s Eve. When I searched through the coats section, I focused on finding 2 blazers in my size. First I came across this beautiful lilac purple blazer and knew I wanted to use it for the project. The texture was nice and the fabric wasn’t too thick. Finally I found this soft black & white plaid blazer. I loved the style and it was similar in size to the other one.
Explain your process in editing / altering items.
One of the first things I did was wash the 2 blazers. Then I placed the plaid blazer on my cutting board and used my scissors to horizontally cut across under the sleeves. Next I pinned the top part of the piece I just cut to the end part of the purple blazer. I then sewed the two pieces together. After that, I aligned the plaid sleeves against the purple one to determine where I needed to mark. Once I measured how long, I cut the sleeves on both blazers. Next I pinned the plaid sleeves to the purple blazer and sewed the pieces together.
What was your inspiration for the finished piece? Any current trends, pieces of Art, designers etc that inspired this look?
I decided on making an upcycled coat after searching through Pinterest. I saw a reworked trench coat with contrasting jean fabric. This inspired me to make a coat in a similar style but out of 2 blazers. Also this month has been very cold and gloomy. So I knew I wanted to create something that I could layer my other clothes with.
