We’re feeling the love from local designer, Cassidy Burel!
This Valentine’s season, Cassidy Burel and her stylist, Eutasha Harewood created a hot pink one-piece ensemble flipped from a dated suit jacket from Triad Goodwill!
For those of you new to Stitched Up, Cassidy is an incredibly talented fashion designer and owner of CassB By Design. She is our local guide to exploring all the thrifted fashion possibilities within your local Triad Goodwill with just a few selective alterations!
What’s your process for selecting the item from our store? What drew you to these pieces?
February is a month where we get a day set aside to celebrate love. I am a huge fan of both Valentine’s Day and the colors red and pink. I wanted to do something Valentine’s Day themed for this month’s Stitched Up. Everyone gravitates towards red, and so when I saw the hot pink suit jacket hanging on the rack, I knew it could be turned into something even more fabulous!
Explain Your Process for Creating & Altering Your Design
This month’s article is definitely geared towards seamstresses/pattern makers because I wanted to take a garment, deconstruct it, and turn it into something completely different. This requires a knowledge of pattern making, efficient fabric usage, and of course, sewing.
To begin, I took measurements of myself to draft a pattern set for my design. I took these measurements and used them to create a pattern for both a onesie I had sketched up as well as a sheer overcoat. After I had drafted the patterns, as seen in the picture, I went into completely taking apart the jacket. I needed to primarily use it for the fabric and of course it’s radiant color, I was careful to seams, rip and save as much fabric as possible from which to cut out my new pieces. I then cut out all of my new pieces, sewed them together, and then did the first fitting to make sure I liked how it was looking. Once I had the base of the onesie, I gathered about 5 yards of 3” long strips of tulle, pinned it in place on the garment, and sewed it all down. The sheer overcoat, I used extra fabric from the remaining tulle and it went perfectly with the completed look.
What Was Your Inspiration for Creating this Look?
I was inspired by the spirit of the holiday that is Valentine’s Day. I love the colors and the flirty outfits all the gals get dressed up in for the holiday. This, as well as the vibrant color hot pink, and my innate obsession of gathered tulle brought me to the finished look that you see today.
