A Sleek & Polished Look For Fall!
Sure, summer is great. But, there’s something magical about the change in the seasons – and the change in style! This month, Cassidy embraced the change of season with a big change in vibe while keeping her process simple and affordable! We can’t wait for you to check it out.
For those of you who are new here, Cassidy is an incredibly talented Fashion Designer and owner of CassB By Design. She is our local guide to exploring all the thrifted fashion possibilities within your local Triad Goodwill with just a few selective alterations!
Explain your process for selecting the item from our store. What drew you to it?
This month, the goal was to go towards more of a chic styled look. Whereas last month was heavily based on bold colors and fabric texture, my stylist and I were moving towards a sleek and polished look as autumn approaches. We knew we wanted to look for a suit jacket and change it up. Thus, upon entering our Goodwill store location, we went directly to the suiting section. It wasn’t long until I came across a longer coat that would be perfect for our idea this month. All that was left was to seek out a nice pair of black pants that we could easily tailor to fit the look.
Explain your process in editing / altering items.
The most amount of altering to be done was going to be the jacket so I began with that first. Step number one was to remove one of the sleeves so I could begin re-sculpting the right side of the garment. I carefully seam ripped the sleeve and its lining off being careful not to damage the fabric in case it needed to be used later. After the sleeve was off, I marked where I was going to trim off the excess fabric
with pins to create our desired asymmetrical look.
Upon trimming off much of the fabric around the right shoulder, I turned the coat wrong side out and roughly took in the sides to give it a slimmer fit around the waistline. It was originally a men’s coat and to fit a more petite frame it had to be taken in quite a bit.
After the shape of the coat was looking more sculpted, I pinned the sleeve I had removed to the newly
created neckline to act as a new lapel. After it was all sewn on, I gave it a good press and started on the
pants. All they needed was a quick taper down at the leg bottom and they were ready for a photoshoot.
What was your inspiration for the finished piece?
My stylist and I have been scouring fashion trends for chic and polished looks for fall. We wanted something that didn’t fit within the basic mold of sweaters paired with booties and a scarf. One of my personal favorite outfits is anything ranging from a matching pant-suit, collared button down shirts and a good heel. With cold weather approaching, we were inspired by heavier textiles and darker colors. And thus, our idea was born.
