James’ Success Story

When James arrived in Greensboro, North Carolina, he had no idea that his life was about to change in the most unexpected and inspiring way. Once a high-earning professional in Georgia, James had worked in high-end sales for American Express and even ran his own music studio. But a series of personal and family challenges—including a near-fatal accidental encounter with fentanyl—left him homeless, jobless, and searching for a way forward.

James found himself at Greensboro Urban Ministry, a local shelter, after completing rehab. With no job, no transportation, and no connections in the area, he was at a crossroads. “I went from making $100,000 to being dead broke,” he recalled. But it was at Greensboro Urban Ministry that he first heard about Triad Goodwill’s Career Center—and that’s where his story began to turn around.

Initially, James applied for an assistant manager position at Goodwill, but transportation challenges kept him from securing the role. Still, the kindness and support he experienced during the interview process led him to the Career Center, where he met Goodwill’s Skills Training & Placement Program Manager Shaniqua, who would become a pivotal figure in his journey.

From Homelessness to Hope: James’ Journey to a New Life at Goodwill

Despite his initial hesitation, James enrolled in Goodwill’s construction training program. “I said to myself; I’m a smart guy. I excelled in math. I just needed a place to be during the day.” What started as a practical decision to stay warm and safe during the winter months quickly evolved into a life-changing opportunity.

“It’s going to sound silly but between hearing about the courses and the kindness I felt here – even just offering fresh fruit and water in the Career Center – for someone that’s homeless, that doesn’t have any money to eat during the day, I was happily like, you know what, I’ll take it. I can get some tangible stuff here and take the class.”

Through the 10-week program in partnership with Tiny House Community Development, James discovered a passion for electrical work. “The frequency and sound in music are the same as electricity,” he explained, drawing a connection between his background in audio engineering and his new path. With the support of instructors like Mike, James found himself thriving.

His dedication paid off. He completed the Construction Trade NCCER Certification, obtained his OSHA 10 certification, and thanks to the Held Grant, was able to purchase a vehicle, which has widened his options for employment possibilities. “The grant awarded me $12,000. I took the $3,000 up front and found a vehicle. That changed everything,” he said.

Today, James is focused on building a strong foundation for his future. With hands-on training and certifications under his belt, he’s actively pursuing full-time opportunities in the electrical field. He’s planning ahead – working toward securing permanent housing and holding onto the dream of starting a family one day. His journey is just beginning, and the possibilities are wide open.

“If I could talk to myself 10 months ago, I’d say: ‘Thank you for wanting more out of your life,’” James reflected. “And thank you for even being nervous and afraid – but being more afraid of regretting than attempting.”

James’ story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, resilience, and a little bit of goodwill, transformation is possible.
