Interactive Event for Understanding the Reality of Scarcity
GREENSBORO, NC – Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Inc. (Triad Goodwill) will be hosting, Understanding the Reality of Scarcity: A Poverty Simulation on Tuesday, July 30 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Community Life Center located at 205 W. Farriss Avenue in High Point. This no-cost, interactive simulation outlines challenges nearly 1 out of 5 Guilford County residents face living in poverty. Participants will role-play the lives of low-income families and gain insight into the structural barriers these individuals encounter daily.
“There is this idea that to escape poverty, people just need to work harder and ‘pull themselves up by their bootstraps,’” explains John Totty, director of workforce development at Triad Goodwill. “When in reality, the conditions of poverty are much more complex to maneuver. By attending this event, individuals will directly experience how the cyclical nature of poverty leads to unemployment and underemployment in our community, despite giving full efforts to meet your family’s basic needs.”
This event is the finale of Triad Goodwill’s, What’s Behind the Worker Shortage series, which has explored the realities and challenges of making ends meet, the cognitive impacts when they don’t meet those needs, and the financial realities of losing government benefits. The Poverty Simulation is open to the public, and ideal for HR professionals, business leaders, community and government leaders, and front-line support staff.
In addition to the simulation, the event will include a catered lunch, a debrief to thoughtfully discuss the experience of the simulation, and next steps participants can take as an individual to address the causes and conditions of poverty. This event is available at no-cost, and is a partnered event with the United Way of Greater Greensboro, Resilience High Point, and The Hayden-Harman Foundation.
