Success Story: Michelle P.
When Michelle tells you about her team members, you can’t help but think she sounds more like a proud parent than their manager.
“I want to see leaders come out of my store. I want to cultivate their buy in. If I can help them reach their goals, then they can help me reach my goals.”
Michelle first joined Triad Goodwill in 2023 as the Assistant Store Manager (ASM) at the Retail Store and Donation Center at 3921 Battleground Ave. in Greensboro. “I had been struggling to find the right job after leaving grad school, having a child, and having tragedy hit my family,” she explains. “I didn’t know much about Goodwill, and remembered how big and nice the store was. I always pictured a thrift store as having antique and old stuff- but Goodwill has a lot of cute things I would wear and awesome deals on housewares.”
Michelle was offered the ASM position on the spot during her interview, “I was so happy they offered me the position, but it wasn’t until I went to orientation when I could feel that this was right for me – Goodwill is where I belong.”
“In the past, I was often not sure when being myself was appropriate, so I was often reluctant to give my ideas or feedback. But at Goodwill, I have learned that being a passionate, thoughtful leader is a great thing, and often just what a team needs to see because of the work we do.”
Michelle found herself in a leadership role when her Store Manager left for a new opportunity. “I knew what I was capable of and my skill set, so when he left, I knew I could step up and lead. I told the team, ‘We work for Goodwill, not the store manager. If we try our best, and can come close to our goal, AND have a great day together- then that’s a good day.’”
On Superbowl Sunday, Michelle had her first day as Store Manager at the Goodwill Retail Store and Donation Center at 3739 W. Gate City Blvd. in Greensboro. She’s eager to learn more about her team, what drives them, and help the store and her team achieve their goals.
“Goodwill has a heart, and we keep the mission at the forefront of every project. We understand that people deserve to feel proud of themselves and can make positive changes in their own lives.
